The below information has been provided in an effort to help keep the community informed on a more frequent basis about progress at the AltEn site.
Ever since AltEn ceased operations at its facility in Mead in 2021, the AltEn Facility Response Group (FRG) has been voluntarily working under the guidance of the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) to stabilize the AltEn site and develop a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for the site. The FRG’s top priorities have been and continue to be to help ensure the safety of the surrounding community and environment. To-date, there has been no evidence of impacts to local drinking water.
The FRG is working diligently with the NDEE to identify the most effective and safest methods to address the current environmental conditions on the AltEn site. The remedial action plans (RAP) will recommend remediation for components remaining on-site, including wastewater, sludge, and wet cake.

July Community Update: Site Progress
More than 127,500 tons of wet cake have been removed from the AltEn site, with solidification now complete and total removal to be finished this summer. New groundwater results are in, and additional land application of treated water is planned for this fall.
Wet Cake Removal
Wet cake solidification is complete. Although approximately 22,000 tons still need to be transported off-site, removal is expected to be completed this summer.

Lagoon Solids RAP Submitted June 30
The FRG’s Lagoon Solids Remedial Action Plan (RAP) was submitted to the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) in June, with the recommended approach to solidify solids and cover the land. This is the most sensible long-term solution for the community and the environment.

Groundwater Monitoring Results
Samples were collected in June 2025, with no pesticides found that were above drinking water criteria, with the exception of two wells that show elevated ammonia levels. Six new monitoring wells were installed in June.

Fall Land Application Planned
An estimated 13.5 million gallons of treated stormwater will be applied to approximately 500 acres this fall, pending favorable weather conditions.
