June 2026 Community Update: Focused on More Progress 

The below information has been provided in an effort to help keep the community informed on a more frequent basis about progress at the AltEn site. 

Ever since AltEn ceased operations at its facility in Mead in 2021, the AltEn Facility Response Group (FRG) has been voluntarily working under the guidance of the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment (NDWEE) to stabilize the AltEn site and develop a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for the site. The FRG’s top priorities have been and continue to be to help ensure the safety of the surrounding community and environment. To-date, there has been no evidence of impacts to local drinking water.

The FRG is working diligently with the NDWEE to identify the most effective and safest methods to address the current environmental conditions on the AltEn site. The remedial action plans (RAP) will recommend remediation for components remaining on-site, including wastewater, sludge, and wet cake.

Lagoon Solids RAP: Phase 1 is Underway

Phase 1 implementation of the Lagoon Solids RAP began in June with solidification and consolidation of materials. Phase 2 is set to begin in 2027.

Wet Cake Area Restoration Continues

With the wet cake removal completed, fill material has been placed and graded with seeding added. Restoration work is set to be finished – a major milestone in site remediation.

Groundwater and Soil Sample Updates

Quarterly groundwater monitoring continues, with additional monitoring wells installed and subsurface soil samples collected.

Other Site Activities

Demolition of the former grain bin’s underground infrastructure is expected to begin in July. Stormwater treatment restarted in April 2026, with land application planned for this Fall. Planning continues for EcoVap, a water evaporation structure, as does preparation for Groundwater and On-Site Soil RAPs, with submission of both to the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy and Environment (NDWEE) later this year.
