The below information has been provided in an effort to help keep the community informed on a more frequent basis about progress at the AltEn site.
Ever since AltEn ceased operations at its facility in Mead in 2021, the AltEn Facility Response Group (FRG) has been voluntarily working under the guidance of the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) to stabilize the AltEn site and develop a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for the site. The FRG’s top priorities have been and continue to be to help ensure the safety of the surrounding community and environment. To-date, there has been no evidence of impacts to local drinking water.
The FRG is working diligently with the NDEE to identify the most effective and safest methods to address the current environmental conditions on the AltEn site. The remedial action plans (RAP) will recommend remediation for components remaining on-site, including wastewater, sludge, and wet cake.

March Community Update: Progress Resumes at AltEn Site
Much progress has been made during the winter months, especially in preparing wet cake to be moved off site this Spring. The FRG will soon resume removing wet cake from the AltEn site as weather permits. Additional updates this month include progress on subsoil sampling, groundwater monitoring and key dates in 2025.
A Quick Look Back: Progress to Date
More than 55,000 cubic yards of wet cake has been removed from the site, with mixing continuing on site during the winter months. Videos have been posted on AltEnInfo.com that tracks our work so far this year – and now we have an eye on more to accomplish in 2025.

Wet Cake Removal
Wet cake removal will begin again in the coming weeks, pending favorable weather conditions. Solidification begins in April, with us on track to complete removal of all wet cake by the end of 2025. Approximately 24,900 tons of cement-solidified wet cake and 59,900 tons of bentonite-solidified wet came remain on site.

Northwest Lagoon Subsoil Sampling
A total of 16 soil borings were sampled in October 2024. Results are consistent with previous sample results.

Groundwater Monitoring
Groundwater samples were collected in December, with results showing no pesticides exceeding screening levels, with the exception of one compound in MW5 – located in the northwestern part of the site – with a decreasing concentration level compared to previous samplings.

Key Dates
Several work plans and reports have been submitted to the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE), with other official updates, collections, Remedial Action Plans (RAPs) to be submitted throughout the year.
