The below information has been provided in an effort to help keep the community informed on a more frequent basis about progress at the AltEn site.
Ever since AltEn ceased operations at its facility in Mead in 2021, the AltEn Facility Response Group (FRG) has been voluntarily working under the guidance of the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment (NDWEE) to stabilize the AltEn site and develop a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for the site. The FRG’s top priorities have been and continue to be to help ensure the safety of the surrounding community and environment. To-date, there has been no evidence of impacts to local drinking water.
The FRG is working diligently with the NDWEE to identify the most effective and safest methods to address the current environmental conditions on the AltEn site. The remedial action plans (RAP) will recommend remediation for components remaining on-site, including wastewater, sludge, and wet cake.

October Community Update: 2025 Progress
With the arrival of colder weather, the FRG notes progress following the year’s busiest months with updates on former wet cake area grading, Fall land application and the latest groundwater results.
Wet Cake Progress
A total of 165,367 tons (7,293 truckloads) of wet cake was removed from the site, with transportation and disposal completed in August 2025. Fill material continues to be placed and graded over the former pile area to facilitate stormwater runoff, with grading to be completed in Spring 2026.
September Groundwater Monitoring Results
Samples were collected in September 2025. There were no significant changes from previous groundwater sampling. Groundwater quality remains safe for the village of Mead.
Ongoing Site Activities
Stormwater treatment continues; additional treated water was land-applied earlier this Fall, with another phase to be completed in November.
The site’s grain silo demolition and hoop building accessories removal started earlier this month.
The Stormwater Management Plan will be submitted next month.
